Nude Vacation...Sounds Interesting!

Apparently, nudist vacations are the ‘green’ thing to do this summer! James Kanter wrote a piece for the New York Times about the increasing popularity of nudist trips:

Going without clothes on beaches and other vacation spots is commonly called naturism — a description that implies helping the planet, as some practitioners claim to be doing….Where to go? France is already a top destination for “textilists” (a term some naturists use to describe clothes-wearers) but also seems to be one of the most appealing spots for vacationing in the buff. According to the tourist authority in the Aquitaine region on the French Atlantic coast, “‘green’ naturism is growing fast in popularity.” Of the 1.5 million people who practice naturism in France, nearly a third come to Aquitaine while “foreign naturists” account for more than half of holidaymakers in the centers and campsites across the region. (Presumably their fossil fuel use in transportation could cancel any climate benefits of going clothes-free.)

According to Nixon, I should have been aborted...

On Jan. 23, 1973, when the Supreme Court struck down laws criminalizing abortion in Roe v. Wade, President Richard M. Nixon made no public statement. But privately, newly released tapes reveal, he expressed ambivalence.

Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness,” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases — like interracial pregnancies, he said.

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding, “Or a rape.”

I love you too, Tricky Dick!

My favorite is “I buy caviar with food stamps.”

I am on a paycation…this weekend I’m in San Francisco, next weekend in St. Paul and then New York the following weekend! I like this recession!

“…gay people can and do reproduce. Gay women can do so through artificial insemination, and gay men can do so through surrogacy, both of which are widely accepted means of heterosexual reproduction in cases of infertility. But this misses a much more important point: producing a baby is only the first (and arguably the easiest) step in a much longer and more difficult process. Human babies require years of care before they are able to survive on their own. That’s the reason marriage is supposed to be a long-term commitment. It has nothing to do with making babies; it has everything to do with raising them. And gays are just as capable (in my experience often more so) of raising children as straight people. So the truth is the exact opposite of what you say: the shortage of resources is not babies; we’ve got babies aplenty. What there is a shortage of is couples who are ready, willing and able to raise those babies to adulthood. So it is not gay marriage that “takes families out of the pool”, is is the prohibition on gay marriage that has this effect!” Rondam Ramblings (via azspot:brigno)
